Summary of Events

Officials at the Syrian Embassy in Amman detained several young men and two women who demonstrated by wearing the independence flag. Official attacked the protesters with wooden sticks and electric batons sending one to the hospital. Demonstrators held a sit-in at the embassy and threatened to sue the Ambassador Bahjat Suleiman. The detainees were later released.

A successful general strike swept the country while many storeowners and students remained home in what activists deemed the “dignity strike.” This was one of tactics planned by peaceful activists to put pressure and bring down the regime. Response rates were remarkably high in Homs, Damascus suburbs, Aleppo, Daraa, Idlib, Deir Azzour, Hama, and a few downtown areas. Security forces forced many storeowners to open their stores, while breaking the locks of the stores that remained closed.

Security forces killed at least 26 civilians today. The town of Bosra Harir in Daraa witnessed a massive defection of army soldiers who attacked the army supply lines and clashed with regime forces destroying several tanks and armoured units.

In Lattakia, security forces conducted random house-to-house searches in Aweyne and Slaiba after these neighbourhoods witnessed high strike response rates. Assad’s forces also documented the names of all the owners of closed stores and called them one by one threatening them with repercussions if their stores weren’t opened. Addounia TV crew were present in Lattakia again under the protection of security forces and militiamen to film evidence of a “normal life”. As usual, many student demonstrations broke out in the neighbourhoods of Bostan Sedawi and Aweyne, while quick night demonstrations occurred on Antakya St. and the neighbourhoods of Aweyne, Bustan Hamami, and Bostan Samake. Security forces shelled and opened heavy machinegun fire on the neighbourhoods of Raml Janubi, Slaiba, and Qanaines. A bus carrying 22 workers from Homs was captures near the presidential space. The passengers were kidnapped and are still missing, while the bus was found deserted.
